The History of Black Dog

Every success story has a rich history to it. When the drink itself is rich in taste, colour and aroma, you and I can only imagine the history behind it. Black Dog has been in market for more than a century and has never failed to appeal the masses. It has won the best 18 YO Scotch of the year at the International wine event. Let me take you through the history of Black Dog today.

In the year 1883, Walter Millard, A Scot  from British India travelled to Scotland in search of one of the finest Whiskies. It was a blend created by James Mackinlay, from the Leith Scotch Whisky family, that ended Walter Millard's quest for one of the finest Scotch. Four regions in Scotland, namely Islay, Lowlands, Highlands and Speside contribute with their blends to the Black Dog Scotch Whisky.

The naming of the brand Black Dog is a story in itself. Sir Walter Millard was an angler. His favourite salmon fishing fly which was used during the early 19th century in Scotland rivers Tey and Spey was named Black Dog. Thus, in honour of the fishing fly, the Scotch was named Black Dog. Today, the brand is everyones' favourite Scotch drink. If fact, people here in India believe Scotch and Black Dog are parallel names for the same drink.

The United Spirits group USL, in India signed with Black Dog to form United distilleries in the year 1992. USL imports undiluted spirits from Scotland, one of the reasons being a low import duty on unbottled spirit. The bottling process is carried out in Nasik in Maharashtra to cater to the Indian Scotch audience. In 2008, Black Dog completed 125 Years of its commercial operations and has made itself the defacto Scotch in India.
